SeaLink Western Australia proudly partnered with EcoSurf Australia, Keep Australia Beautiful WA, and students from Ellenbrook Secondary College to mark World Environment (5 June) and World Oceans Day (8 June) with a large-scale beach clean-up at Salmon Bay, Rottnest Island.

Held on Friday, 6 June, this community initiative saw volunteers collect 46.5 kilograms of flotsam and jetsam debris, equating to 1,914 individual items removed from the bay. Among the most common items collected were:

  • 1,093 pieces of hard plastic
  • 169 rope scraps (~ 1 metre)
  • 134 pieces of plastic film

This marks the fourth collaboration between SeaLink WA and EcoSurf Australia in the last two years, an ongoing partnership focused on protecting and preserving the fragile coastal ecosystems of Western Australia.

Leycester Cory, General Manager of SeaLink Western Australia, said, “Our team is on the water every day, and we see firsthand how vital it is to protect these beautiful places. Events like this remind us that even small actions like picking up a single plastic bottle can have a huge impact.

“I'm incredibly proud of the SeaLink crew, our partners, and the next generation of ocean advocates from Ellenbrook Secondary College. This was a true team effort, and we'll continue supporting projects that make a real difference to marine health and biodiversity,” Mr Cory continued.

Sonja Belle-Wood, Founder of EcoSurf Australia, added, “These beach clean-ups are more than just rubbish collection, they're opportunities to educate, connect, and take action. The ongoing support from SeaLink WA and other community partners helps build momentum for lasting change.”

SeaLink WA remains committed to sustainability across all operations and regularly collaborates on environmental initiatives that reflect its long-standing connection to land and sea.
