One year on from its dazzling debut, Illumina, Queensland's first permanent light show, continues to mesmerise visitors to SeaLink K'gari's Kingfisher Bay Resort, blending art, storytelling, and nature in a luminous celebration of the island's World Heritage-listed environment and history.
Since its launch on 30 September 2024, more than 15,000 guests have experienced this unique after-dark adventure, which transforms resort's natural lagoon and surrounding bushland into a breathtaking canvas of light, sound, and wonder.
Designed by renowned Australian light artist Bruce Ramus, Illumina was created to celebrate K'gari's natural beauty and cultural stories through an immersive sensory journey. No two performances are ever the same, with the island's changing weather and light conditions shaping the atmosphere each night.
“Illumina has quickly become an iconic part of the K'gari experience—one that connects our guests to the island in a completely new way,” said Daniel Maroszek, General Manager of SeaLink K'gari.
It's been wonderful to see how people respond, their sense of awe, reflection, and appreciation for this truly special place,” he continued.
To celebrate its first anniversary, Kingfisher Bay Resort has launched a limited time offer for in-house guests running through 30 November 2025:
- Adults receive 50% off tickets
- Kids (14 and under) go free.
Sustainable by Design
From concept to completion, Illumina was developed with a strong commitment to environmental sustainability:
- Energy-efficient LED lighting powers the entire installation, minimising energy consumption.
- Hand-mixed concrete was used on-site, reducing the environmental impact of commercial batching and heavy machinery.
- All materials were transported by hand or wheelbarrow, avoiding diesel-powered vehicles and cranes.
- Locally sourced ironbark timber, milled in South East Queensland, was used for the viewing platforms, minimising transport emissions and supporting regional industry.
These thoughtful design choices ensure Illumina remains low-impact and in harmony with the island's fragile ecosystems, while still providing a world-class, immersive experience.
An Island of Global Significance
K'gari, formerly named Fraser Island, is the world's largest sand island, and a World Heritage-listed site renowned for its outstanding universal value, located off the coast of Queensland, Australia. Stretching more than 120 kilometres, it is celebrated for its extraordinary diversity, from towering rainforests growing on sand, to crystal-clear freshwater lakes and vast dune systems sculpted by time.
Home to the largest pure population of dingoes (wongari) in the world, K'gari also holds deep cultural significance for the Butchulla People, the island's Traditional Owners, whose stories continue to inspire and guide its care.
K'gari is home to two of Australia's premier eco-accredited resorts—Kingfisher Bay Resort and K'gari Beach Resort—along with K'gari Explorer Tours, all operated by SeaLink K'gari. Together, these operations offer guests meaningful, low-impact ways to explore the island's pristine wilderness, from immersive guided tours to sustainable accommodation and experiences.
SeaLink K'gari's resorts and experiences hold Advanced Ecotourism Certification from Ecotourism Australia, reflecting their commitment to environmental stewardship, partnership with Traditional Owners, and the protection of K'gari's World Heritage-listed landscapes for generations to come.
“Illumina is much more than a light show, it's a reflection of K'gari itself: powerful, ever-changing, and deeply connected to nature,” Mr Maroszek said.
