The Birthplace of America Celebrates Its Semiquincentennial With a Year-Long Programme of Events

Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau

Philadelphia, PA — As the United States marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Philadelphia is poised to become the global focus of celebration, culture and discovery in 2026. The city that witnessed America's founding is preparing to honour its legacy, its innovations and its contributions through an expansive year-long slate of events and experiences.

250 Years of History, 52 Weeks of Firsts

At the heart of the 2026 celebration is the initiative 52 Weeks of Firsts - a citywide programme that will spotlight a different “first” every Saturday throughout 2026. From the first hot-air balloon flight in America to the first public Girl Scout cookie sale, from the inventions that shaped everyday life to milestones in culture, social progress, science and civic life, Philadelphia will remind the world why so many important chapters of American history began here.

Each weekly celebration will include free public events: storytelling sessions, live performances, pop-ups, community gatherings, some at the original sites of these “firsts.” Visual landmarks of sculptures, curated exhibitions and interactive experiences will help visitors engage with Philadelphia's unrivalled legacy of firsts.

An Unforgettable Year for Sports and Global Events

In 2026, Philadelphia isn't just honouring its past, it's capturing global attention. The city will be one of the host venues for FIFA World Cup 2026 matches, welcoming fans from around the world.

Beyond football, the city will also stage major sporting and cultural events including playing host to the MLB All-Star Game that draw international audiences, reinforcing Philadelphia's status as a must-visit destination for travellers drawn to history, sport and culture alike.

Cultural, Artistic and Educational Highlights

2026 will also bring major new museum exhibitions, immersive art installations and citywide cultural festivals designed to reflect and reinterpret Philadelphia's role in shaping American life. For example:

  • A landmark art exhibition across the city's premier institutions will trace the evolution of American visual culture.
  • Historic venues and modern museums alike will host special programming, from interactive history exhibits to freshly curated displays that honour the city's pioneering spirit.

Journalists, travel editors and media partners are invited to explore our full 2026 calendar, feature our “52 Weeks of Firsts,” and highlight why the City of Brotherly Love will be the destination to watch, experience and celebrate in 2026.
