San Diego's Dining Scene Is Heating Up - Here's Why It Deserves Your Attention

San Diego Tourism Authority

This month we're spotlighting a few local standouts: explore modern French flavours at Le Coq, savour sustainable Baja-inspired cuisine at 31ThirtyOne by Deckman's, dine under the stars at Leila's, experience the unique setting and story behind Quixote, and enjoy award-winning cider at Bivouac Ciderworks.

Please find further detail below and plenty of reasons to taste your way through San Diego.

Le Coq

Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod's new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara's Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout.

31ThirtyOne by Deckman's

Spearheaded by Michelin starred Chef Drew Deckman, this culinary destination is a vibrant tribute to the flavours of Baja and Southern California. With an unwavering commitment to sustainability and seasonality, Deckman crafts dishes that spotlight the freshest local harvests, from Pacific seafood to farm grown produce, celebrating the region's rich cross border culinary heritage. Leila

When locals are planning their nights around getting a table before reservations fill up, you know it's a spot worth seeking out. Tucked beneath a canopy of stars and Moroccan lanterns, Leila invites guests into a lush, multi-sensory escape located in North Park. This 4,800-square-foot oasis draws on the founders' Iranian roots to create a dining experience that honours his heritage. With dishes like saffron-kissed tahdig and flame-grilled koobideh, Executive Chef Wesley Remington Johnson brings modern flair to Middle Eastern classics, using seasonal ingredients and traditional techniques. From a dramatic open kitchen with tandoor ovens and fire pits to a thoughtful beverage program featuring Middle Eastern wines, ornate tea service, and arak-driven cocktails, Leila blends intimacy and grandeur in every detail.

Quixote at The Lafayette Hotel

Quixote is an Oaxacan-inspired concept and Mezcalería designed with monastic qualities that envelop guests with an agnostic sense of worship. The entire space was created from a decommissioned Catholic church in Mexico and reconstructed to showcase dark wood panelling, rough cobblestones that dot the entryway, flickering Santa Maria candles, rich stained-glass windows and baroque pews and banquettes surrounding the pulpit-inspired bar. Heirloom grains and masa with artisanal moles anchor the dining experience alongside creative craft cocktail spotlighting mezcal and Mexican distillates.
